IMPORTANT!

Changing valve timing requires solid engine knowledge. Only perform this work if you are experienced with Yamaha single-cylinder timing procedures.

Functionality (what the wheel does)

The angle between the index bores and the outer markings is precisely matched so that the camshaft changes by 1° when the timing chain is moved by four teeth and the index pin by one hole (equivalent to 2° at the crankshaft).

Yamaha Original Setting

  • Flywheel mark aligned to OT (TDC).
  • “0” mark on the camshaft drive wheel aligned with the cylinder head cover sealing surface (per Repair Instructions).
  • Index pin in hole “0”.

Examples

Set Camshaft to 1° Earlier (≈ 2° at crank)

  • Flywheel mark on OT.
  • Mark “1” on cam wheel aligned to the cylinder head cover sealing surface.
  • Index pin in hole “1”.

Set Camshaft to 2° Later (≈ 4° at crank)

  • Flywheel mark on OT.
  • Mark “-2” on cam wheel aligned to the cylinder head cover sealing surface.
  • Index pin in hole “-2”.

Adjustment Range

Maximum possible adjustment is 4° earlier (both labels to “4”) or 3° later (both labels to “−3”). (Cam degrees shown; crankshaft is double: 8° earlier / 6° later.)
